Myofunctional Therapy
Myofunctional Therapy or Orofacial Myology, is a therapy program designed to meet the individual needs of each patient with the aim to restore the proper function of the oral and facial muscles.
We use our oral and facial muscles ever day, multiple times a day for tasks such as; - chewing - swallowing - breathing - speaking When our oral and facial muscles are not being used optimally, it can impact facial growth and development, feeding/eating skills, speech/articulation development, oral hygiene, orthodontic treatment and maintenance, occlusion of the teeth and more. Myofunctional therapy targets the oral and facial muscles via exercises to ensure neuromuscular re-education and create new, healthier and optimal oral habits for life. If you have ever noticed: - A resting open mouth posture - mouth breathing instead of nasal breathing (or struggling with nasal breathing) - open bite - tongue pushing against or through the teeth when swallowing (tongue thrust) - tongue sitting low in the mouth - persistent drooling - needing to drink with meals - messy eating - noisy chewing/eating - snoring or noisy breathing/ sleep apnea - orthodontic relapse - jaw pain - swallowing difficulty - persistent speech problems - tongue tie A myofunctional assessment could be extremely beneficial. A true Myofunctional Therapy program is able to be done with age 4/5 and up. Under this age we use a modified approach which we refer to as Baby Myo.
